This week, I started my Level 4 Diploma in Innate Botanical Selections (IBS)
What's Innate Botanical Selections?
IBS (not the best abbreviation but relevant for a nutritionist I guess!) is also known as Zoopharmacognosy.
The word zoopharmacognosy derives from ancient Greek: ‘zoo’ (animal); ‘pharmaco’ (remedy); ‘gnosy’ (knowing).
Basically is is all about animals self-medicating and refers to an animal's innate ability to self-select plants, essential oils, and other natural remedies to support their health and wellbeing.
It’s based on the idea that animals instinctively know what their bodies need and can use natural substances to address issues like pain, stress, or digestive problems. This behavior is often observed in the wild, where animals may chew specific plants, lick clay, or roll in certain herbs to treat themselves.
You've seen dogs eat grass to induce vomiting? That's zoopharmacognosy.
Why have I chosen to learn about Innate Botanical Selections?
There are many reasons and it completes nutrition really well:
Empowers Dogs to Take Control of Their Wellbeing
By offering a range of safe, natural options (like essential oils, dried herbs, or hydrosols), zoopharmacognosy allows dogs to communicate what their body needs. This can improve their physical and emotional health without forcing solutions that may not resonate with them.
Supports Holistic Healing
Zoopharmacognosy focuses on addressing the root causes of health problems rather than masking symptoms. For instance, a dog dealing with anxiety might select calming oils like chamomile or valerian, which can provide both emotional and physiological relief.
Reduces Stress in Treatments
Many dogs dislike being handled or forced to take medications. Self-selection eliminates the stress of administering treatments, as they’re naturally drawn to what they need and can choose to interact with the substance at their own pace.
Complementary to Conventional Treatments
While zoopharmacognosy doesn’t replace veterinary care, it complements it beautifully by offering additional support for chronic conditions, recovery after surgery, or behavioral challenges like fear or aggression.
Strengthens Your Bond with Your Dog
Learning this practice allows you to better understand your dog’s needs. Watching them self-select remedies fosters a deeper connection and trust between you and your pet.
By learning zoopharmacognosy, it empowers the owner to give your dog the tools to live a healthier, happier, and more balanced life. It’s a gentle, respectful approach to health that puts your dog’s needs and instincts at the forefront.
I can't wait to learn more and use innate botanical selections alongside nutrition to help our dogs manage and prevent many illnesses that affect them.
I will be looking for case studies in the near future so stay tune.
